Where pulp and paper emission intensity goes wrong
Paper mills burn the widest mix of fuels of any CCTS sector, much of it biogenic, and make many grades on the same machines. These are the points we test in every mill.
Biogenic versus fossil carbon
Black liquor, bagasse, agro-residue and wood waste are biogenic and are treated separately from fossil fuels under the notified methodology. Mills that lump all boiler carbon together overstate their intensity.
Multi-fuel boilers
Coal, lignite, husk, bagasse and other fuels are often co-fired in the same boiler in proportions that change weekly. Fuel-wise weighment and GCV testing frequency decide whether the split can be verified at all.
Furnish mix
Virgin, recycled and agro furnish have very different specific energy demand. Where furnish changes during the year, the figure must follow the notified methodology, not a crude average.
Lime kiln and causticising
In integrated kraft mills the lime kiln is a distinct fossil CO2 source and is frequently left out.
Cogeneration and steam
Steam let-down from captive cogeneration to the paper machines needs a defensible allocation between power and steam.
Grade-wise production basis
Writing-printing, kraft, duplex, newsprint and tissue cannot be pooled into one tonne without the notified normalisation.

Frequently asked questions
Is black liquor CO2 counted against our target?
Black liquor is a biogenic fuel and is accounted separately from fossil emissions under the notified methodology. Treating it as fossil overstates your intensity.
Our boiler fuel mix changes every week. Is that a problem?
It can be verified, provided fuel-wise weighment and GCV testing are frequent enough. We check this first, because if the records cannot support the split, no verifier can sign off the number.
