Sugar-making process involves several energy-intensive processes – cutting the sugarcane, crushing to extract juices, preparing the syrup, and finally producing the desired quality of sugar. Treatment of sugarcane juice to produce the final product requires heat that is supplied from steam at low pressure (around 1 kg/cm2).
Boilers in sugar mills are run using the bagasse which is the by-product of the cane crushing. Steam produced thus is used for the process as well as to generate electricity. Any surplus electricity beyond the in-house consumption can be sold to the grid. This makes the sugar industry a lucrative industry financially, and also gives it added focus on importance of energy efficiency.
